Alternatively, just pop out to your local lake and enjoy yourself without wondering about degrees of rotation, haul-speed and loop speed....! |

As a golfer, I know I will never be able to compete (or play) with a certain Mr. Woods. Nevertheless, I enjoy trying to play the game to the best of my abilities. I don't need to drive a ball 350 yards to get a par or birdie.
Likewise, I don't feel the need to cast a fly to the horizon in order to have the chance to catch a fish.
I'm maybe missing out here, but what is the need to throw a line to your maximum capabilities?
As a river/burn fisher, I'm guessing here but couldn't you get a boat and drift round the shoreline and cast a short line delicately or is this like a golfers thing - I hit the ball a mile today but scored shite. _________________ The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers. |

Being able to fly cast long distances will help an angler cast into the wind. Also,
the better casting technique an angler has, the less fatigue he or she will feel
after a long day of fishing.
Also, saltwater fly fishing requires long casts, usually into a breeze.
Having said all that, I just think there's a beauty in trying to come close
to perfecting a fly cast. It's something to keep striving for - just for the heck
of it.
That's my two cents.

as blank day says its handy to be able to do i prefer perfect presentation
to distance ,accuracy is in my opinion far more important
as most of my fishing is done on boat or river i can drift or walk on to fish
on saying that perfecting the double haul is handy for bank fishing
I dont see the point in going out for a day to come back goosed after trying
to hurl a line into the far distance
it always amuses us when we see people false cast 3 and 4 times in a boat
line has to be wet to catch |

Often I go into the field and cast on grass. The appeal is in the quest to improve technique. Not all about distance either - you need technique to present a fly delicately at close range.
Curve a cast around an obstacle, throw a mend in the line before it hits the river, avoid the hawthorn tree behind you, the willow roots in front or whatever...
Separate the casting from the fishing.
I like to fish.
I like to cast.
When fishing I concentrate on catching fish.
When casting I concentrate on technique.
Better technique in casting has certaqinly caught me more fish though |

Thankyou for that reasoned arguement Kev, I was struggling to find a reply that didn't have a few expletives in it .

Never blame the rod Allen, it's the person holding it that causes the problems .
Great session yesterday, you're coming on nicely.

According to a lot of great anglers, extending your range 10 to 15 yards is very doable for most of us. Casts out to 50, 55 or even 60 yards are in the ballpark if we gear up and get the mechanics of the cast just right, these pros tell us. |
