Hi All, Iv'e been tying these babies in a very different way for a couple of months now. Mr Unwin from Fulling Mill says, damage from Trout teeth is negligable. I say Mr Unwin, you are wrong. You come to Ellerdine with me and see the results of trout teeth on my flies.

Anyway, most people tie their holographic around the body, why not tie it in using the wire rib, but tie it in horizontally along the body? It makes the flt more resilient to trout teeth and looks fantastic. Add to this a trigger, such as Antron body wool, to the head in a short tuft and you have it.

That's what I have done it works very well, also tie them on buzzer hooks for a different profile too.

I picked up the idea from a number of local anglers to me. It works some times but the ribbed flies have the edge for catching fish for me.

You can strengthen the holo rib with a counter rib of very fine nylon. Or varnish the underbody of the DB before the herl and rib are wrapped. Still come lose on the first fish on occasion.

Would be good to see a pic - I've tried adding orange yarn as a trigger point on emerger/hoppers but didn't have any success with them. That, said nothing was working for me during the summer last year!

Hi All
I learned the value of a size 14 on my visit to Bristol Waters.
If I tie a fly with a holographic rib I combine it with a wire rib and twist the holographic around the wire and then wind the rib as normal a bit fiddly but works.
When they are crunched by trout they do last a bit longer, I have also had nylon rib destroyed by the trouts teeth.
I had also forgotten the old Richard Walker tip of twisting peacock hearl around the tying thread and then wrapping over a thin Varnish coat (reminded by Mr Pugh at the tackle shop).
My D.B's are a lot thinner now, I am going to be interested to see how they work in the gin clear water of Farmoor.

I am really not sure what the tying method is. If it is a holographic rib up the body (presumably peacock) would it help to superglue the side that will be on the body then rib tightly and if necessary, a reverse rib using perhaps 3lb. nylon might be beneficial.

Am I alone in wondering why we go to such lengths to make a fly last a long time when a large proportion of us probably tie enough to last until doomsday?

I say, admire the trout that's just razored your DB, slip it back or whack it, it's up to you, stand tall in the boat and say with pride: "I know what you're thinking. "Did he pack any more of them?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this new fly could be a Diawl Bach - a better alternative, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, trout?"
