I have just discovered this material and as yet not brought any but it looks to me to be a very cheap form of Crystal dubbing.
It is available from EBay sellers at around £4.00 for a ten gram pack which makes it cheaper than the product we buy.
Has any one bought or tried it for flytying.
Here is a YouTube link to the craft application it is meant for but both forms look like they would make good dubbing or bait fish bodies.
Brilliant stuff, if a trifle fine, been using it for 10 years or so, mixes superbly with hare's ear type dubbings & will "stretch" seals fur, as the cost of that is increasing as it become impossible to import - even Veniard's were out of stock & unable to get any recently ! _________________ Hi there, I have around 40 yrs exp. of tying flies, incl. some semi-pro work. After a couple a visits to local craft shops and a lot of blank looks, I ordered a couple of packs from eBay.
I know what you mean re seals fur, I was lucky and bought a job lot of eBay for small change last year so have enough to see out my amateur twiddling days.
Looking forward to mixing in some of the Angelina fibres to enhance the seals and rabbit fur that I use.
Do you use a coffee grinder or mix by hand ?
Cheers

By hand, as the fibres are quite long & need to be torn up, if you use in a c/g, they just melt around the blades, I gather. Have yet to try them in old screw top glass jar with water in though. _________________ Hi there, I have around 40 yrs exp. of tying flies, incl. some semi-pro work. A quick update.
Comparing the two in the photo I can see little difference apart from the Veniards bag is £4.99 for a lot less material.

Methinks Mr.Veniard is buying from the same craft store sources.... _________________ Hi there, I have around 40 yrs exp. of tying flies, incl. some semi-pro work. Looks like a good perch catcher if not the bigger trout. _________________ Floating Lines, buzzers, nymphs, stick floats, maggots and throwing lures at bitey things.
I now use it in lures, bait fish patterns for trout or Perch and chop it up to add to seals fur.
It works on all levels as you know Raffa, some of the colours also have some sort of ultra violet quality that I discovered when I was curing U.V gel heads.
Win win.
Welcome to the Forum Raffa.

Fryfishing, "Raffia" is a natural product, usually cream or dyed brown/olive & is used on mayfly/ d.d.l. bodies.
"Swiss Straw" - as our American cousins call it & is also know as Raffene, is a man made product, to which I think you're reffering. Used originally as a back material for the Polystickle & some smaller nymphs like the Chomper. _________________ Hi there, I have around 40 yrs exp. of tying flies, incl. some semi-pro work.
