Am I the only one on here that has given up using varnish sold for fly tying?
These days I only reach for the Sally Hansen and never use the stuff that the likes of Veniards package and sell.
Over the years I found that flytying varnish thickens up very quickly does not dilute very well and seems poor value compared to the likes of nail varnish.
It is sometimes difficult to know what is best when you are tying flies on your own with out much input from other humans into how what when and where.
Maybe I should rejoin the Flydressers Guild, if they still have a local branch.

I don't often use varnish except on some of my superglue or spanflex style patterns. Other than that I find a couple of 5 turn whip finishes enough to see the fly out, although I have started to varnish the heads on some of my diawl bach and hares ear nymphs when I have tied them with red flourescent floss. This stuff doesn't much like the attention of trout teeth so a spot of HAN prolongs the fly's active life. |

Sally Hansen for me as well. Keep a bottle of newish,thinner, stuff for coating buzzers and an older, thicker, bottle for finishing fly heads. Will also make the bottles last longer by adding cellulose thinners that I bought in a specialist model shop. _________________ I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

I can't remember the last time I used varnish on a fly. These days I use waterproof superglue (Anglin' Glue) where I previously used varnish, Bug Off UV resin and Serious Glue .
The only downside I've found to superglue is you must avoid it getting in the eye of the hook at all costs as it very difficult to remove once it has set!

Pull a small feather through the eye after applying glue, varnish, resin etc. Works for me. |

That works Doug, but you have to pull it through quickly or it will get stuck inside the eye!

I have tried to dilute down hard as nails with cellulose thinners but it tends to make it go cloudy?? I have also tried nail polish remover and that does not work well.
May need to do some googling.
Update to above, pure acetone does it.

My Funky varnish has been the best I'v ever used. Almost finished now so I hope they still do it! |

I always get in a mess with super glue, fingers stuck together, spill it on the desk and leave the top off (then it dries up).
The best stuff was super glue gel that I bought in a pound shop and currently using Gorilla super glue, I knocked it over and it went all over the place.

I have done the 'knock over the bottle' trick too Peter, so nowadays I only use the stuff with a small nozzle rather than a brush.
A really good fly tyer I have watched a few times at BRFFA fly tying evenings uses the bog standard superglue that comes in small tubes that you get in multi packs in £1 shops. He places a droplet of superglue on a disposable surface and uses his dubbing needle to place the glue exactly where he wants it. I now do the same with my choice of superglue, except I use a cocktail stick.

Having had a bottle of gorilla gel and a bottle of gorilla ordinary glue both go off am well pleased at £5 a pop. Will be using pound shop small squeeze tubes going forward. Ki |
