Excellent days fishing, full bag limit caught and fine fighting fish all of them.

Cold and crisp start to the day with thick fog adding to the atmosphere as the sun tried to break through.

The fish were making everyone there busy. First cast in with a goldhead bloodworm the line was hit like a freight train had come by and snapped the tippet instantly, god knows what was striking as I had 5lb tippet on at the time. Proceeded to catch on black bug, white bug and goldhead bloodworm. I couldn't count how many huge tugs I had, it was manic fishing. Sadly had my intermediate fly line snap with what I estimate to be a 6-7lb fish on not far from the net... must've been a manufacturing defect; not a problem, re-kitted up, tied on my fly, single cast and retrieve, bang, next fish on the line. Time to retreat to the pub for lunch and a pint to reflect on how well the fish fight here.

Is it always that easy fishing there? I'm assuming it is. I think next time I go I'll try fishing imitative patterns to see if I can make it harder on myself. It was a great day though, although I think I prefer lakes that are larger than these.

So where do I try next within 1 1/2 hr drive from home (Kew), somewhere larger, any suggestions welcomed?

Well done,Good to hear that-i'm off there on the 30th with my club.Fished it last December,must say i was not overly impressed with it,found the lakes a tad mickey mouseish .It wasn't easy either on that occasion.There are some very big fish in there though.
Assume you have done Syon-yes you must have done .Albury isn't that far away with five lakes to go at.Duncton Mill is well worth the travel imho.

Sadly, although it was a fun day, I did find it all just too small, maybe it was the fog making it seem small... nice to visit once in a while just for those mad fish mind

I regularly fish Syon for a few hours out of the house, given that it's just up the road, I do wish I could fish it Catch and Release though. I'll have to try the others though, thanks for the tip.

You coukld try Halliford Mere in the new year, at Shepperton ,the other side of the airport. C/R £20 aday, hard fishing this time of year ,had two blanks in the last week or so ,will be fluff chucking there today and having a Christmas drink with the governor Bill and boys Hic hic

I do fish Halliford Mere actually, I like it there and will be back mid-Jan for a day blanking to humble me

I'm off up north to see family today so will get the last day before Christmas in at Toft Newton tomorrow

I can assure you Chalk Springs isn't always that easy...I've often struggled for a pull there, and have blanked more than once.

When it's hard fishing there, it's bloody hard. When it's good it's really good. When it's easy fishing, it's boringly easy!!!!
