As the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone has begun its slow annual migration towards the northern hemisphere it has brought with it the typical calm weather and occasional rain storm. The really heavy rain is expected later in a month or two but now the weather is very hot as anyone who watched the 35th IAAF cross country championships in Mombasa over the weekend will have seen. The coast really needs rain but hopefully not too much, just enough to allow the grass to grow back and fix the soil.

Fishing has continued in Shimoni although not so many billfish landed now, mainly dorado and the occasional sailfish. But on Thursday 15th March Broadbill fishing some guests out of the Funzi Keys Resort tagged and released a black marlin of about 180-lb plus they had half a dozen dorado.

Shuwari had a striped marlin on Tue 20th and a mako on Thur 22nd and there were sails caught on both 23rd and 24th, lots of dorado and a few wahoo as well.

But now the real work begins of taking all the fishing reels to pieces to wash and grease them, servicing of the engines and re-painting of the boats. There are always so many jobs to be done on a boat after a busy season so that they are looking and running smooth when you next come fishing here. We are all hoping that next season might be a La Nina year similar to the one in 1998/99 when we witnessed the most amazing billfish fishing ever seen here. We were raising huge packs of striped marlin daily and there were no troughs in the year, just one big peak. If it could be something like that again, wow!

We will keep a boat available throughout the off-season as you really do get some good fishing and nice weather in May and June, but one has to watch the weather a bit though. Anyway I will report back whenever there is something to report. So until then tight lines and adios
