It was not the line but rather the rod was to heavy and the drag not set right. You can do the same thing with mono if you pressure the fish to strongly. If you use braid you need to adjust your tactics and equipment accordingly.

David, my friends in angling may have set there gear up incorrectly, some of these guys I mention have had many many years fishing experience, 2 of the guys are regular money winners on the Sea angling circuit, when sea fishing in a heavy sea you fish locked up, if not you WILL loose fish while in the surf under your feet, you may have a point with Carping, the problem here arises when you need a rod capable of extreme distances, I have often fished for carp at over 120yds, this style of fishing requires fast actioned rods and this is what leads to the problem I've seen, powerful unforgiving rods , braid, and big fish close in are a problem.

My beach casters Daiwa XMs have test curves approaching 6.5lbs, my Zzipplex Quattra almost 7lbs, these tools are not for braid, they are just not designed for it, and after 40+ years of beach angling this is something I feel sure about, a soft actioned fixed spooler maybe fine, assuming the angler knows what he is doing, I will end on that note.

Regards V....

Viking - I was not attacking you or your buddies - I am sure that they know what they are doing.

My comments were intended to be more general advice and I am sorry that I phrased things that way. But I stand by what i said and I think you agree that the rod and reel that you use for mono might not work as well with braided line becuase of the no stretch factor.

One easy way to counter this is to just loosen the drag significantly more then you would while fishing mono. Also, to keep in mind that each movement you make with the rod will have a direct effect at the other end of the line.

Now go rip some lips!
