|The Kinky Muddler was a fly I spotted on one of the US forum some time ago, absolutely exquisitely tied by "Jonny". He didn't just put up three examples simply because they were beautifully tied creations, with heads sculpted out of SF blends, and body/tails varying from bucktail to flat wings, rather he showed them as they were tied for a specific purpose.
Tank testing showed the SF blend muddler type head, pushed a lot of water, which in turn gave a much enhanced movement to the body/tail materials, in whatever they were tied with. Equally importantly, being tied with SF Blend rather than Deer Hair, gave the fly a bit of flash, and it didn't float, as deer hair of such proportions would tend to do, rather it tracked just sub surface.
The fly is not a specific, rather it is a style of tying, and the tier can utilise any number of materials to form the body/tail section, and besides the above, use all SF Blend, Zonker strips, EP or Funky fibres, Ostrich Herl, etc. etc.,
Unfortunately Jonny didn't put up an SBS on the forum, despite a heap of requests to do so, but I tied a few a while back with a zonker strip tail, and put an SBS on this forum, which should at least give you a good idea of how the SF blend muddler head is constructed:-
Construction Details of the above fly:
Hook: Varivas 2600STV or any shortish shank hook.
Tying Thread: Purple 8/0
Tail:- Black Bucktail, tied BTD style, with a little black angel hair, followed by a smaller bunch of Purple Bucktail, again tied BTD style
Head: Deep Purple Steve Farrer Blend (A mix of Slinky Fibre & Angel Hair) tied in a series of hi, lo and mid ties until the hook shank is filled up.
Eyes: 3D dome eyes.
