The Lexus team finals will be held at Chew with the individual finals at Grafham - I suspect that Bob will not be on holiday this year

Hi there - I only resuscitated my fishing ways last summer so I'm really keen to get a lot more experience through 2010!
I'd never fished any reservoirs before, but did enjoy the Barrows (especially as its easy for me to reach from central Bristol). I went once to Chew but found it a bit of a challenge from the bank - I'd love to hook up with someone to go out in a boat sometime. In fact, it'd be great to meet a few people as none of my mates seem interested in fishing... (but people I chatted to at the Barrows all seemed good & friendly!)
[by the way - first post - I used to be totally obsessed by (fly)fishing but the passion was asleep for the last 10 years. Since last year I've really got the bug back and rekindled fly-tying too. Sometime soon I'll post some questions about Box Brook 'cos I'm strongly thinking of joining Bathampton to check it out - rivers were much more my thing and, as I say, I'd never fished a reservoir before. Cheers for now, Tom] _________________ Tom Bugs

Hi Bugbrand.
You're very welcome here and of course to join us at any of the Bristol Waters.
Quite a few of the regulars on this thread make it out to Chew and Blagdon for opening days in March.
Look forward to chatting and fishing with you some time

Cheers guys!
Yes - good to have found this forum and especially this thread (I'd been reading the FlyForums last night and saw someone say that there was a healthy Bristol scene on THIS forum so that's why I came over)
I think I'm going to be away around the time of the BW open season but I'll certainly be getting along soon as possible!
And thanks for the Bathampton link - yeah, I'd been looking at that over the last month and aim to phone the contact (Adrian) tonight. I've seen one or two mentions on this forum, so I'll probably post some questions on such areas later (so as not to derail this thread).
All best for now! _________________ Tom Bugs

Welcome along Tom. Chew can appear awful big if you never fished it before, been there. Barrows are very under rated fishing, nice to see there will be no mouse on 1 and 2 this year.
Should get some good pointers from folks here. Tenet, Bristolflyer and myself do some boat fishing for trout (not that we are any good) so should be able to give some guidance there.
Lakefisher, Allrounder and WCB take to the boats on occasion for some pike on Chew so that may be of interest.
There is a leg of the fly dressers guild that meet at Redhill, just the other side of Lulsgate on alternate Wednesday nights. Demo's are very good and there is a good bunch of old chaps that have fished the ressies for longer than I've been out of school. lots of knowledge to tap into.
BRFFA is only a tenner to join and you get £10 voucher back! Can't go wrong.
Last but not least there is an very friendly evening boat comp. Not everyone's cup of tea but you can fish and not compete. Hot meal and a pint thrown in. This did my boat fishing the world of good when I went along. Some very good fishermen in that (some not so).
All the best, Mark |

Sounds great!
Yes, I'd had a check and seen the fly dresser's guild - I should try to get along sometime - do many people from here go along & are many people fly tyers?
So far I've been a bit scatter-shot in dressings - trying out a wide variety from a couple of books and mags. I did ask in Veals about flies for the Barrows, so should do more with DBs and buzzers (though I didn't yet have any luck using buzzers - more practice needed!). I'd say I was only reasonable at tying but my main work is in electronics so I'm quite used to working with fiddly little things.
I'd not heard of the BRFFA but googled it and, yes, that looks great! And no reason not to join what with the voucher.
I think I'd need a bit more practice before entering a competition! Although that'd be a great way to meet people and pick up tips.
Once the season is open I may give a shout and see if anyone would be up for sharing a boat some day - I work for myself so its not too hard to get out mid-week and it makes a good change!
Thanks for now,

Hi Tom - welcome to the forum. If you join BRFFA soonish you can get to the fly tying evenings that they are organising at the Stoke Inn over the next few weeks. Details on www.brffa.co.uk
I mostly fish weekday evenings so would be happy to partner you in a boat as MarkS did for me a couple of years back. I think I'll mostly fish from the bank early season and then start with the boats when the fish move to deeper water a bit later in the Spring. The five pm evening boat ticket is really good value later in the year when you can stay out until aftre 10pm.
Cheers,
Dave |

Welcome to the Bristol Water Thread - a really friendly bunch of guys sharing a common interest in fishing and Bristols' waters in particular. Speaking of which, someone mentioned that an article in the Trout Fisherman eluded that Bristol Water were undertaking investigations regarding the "missing" trout at Chew. Has anyone heard any more about this?

Don't go to the guild at the moment as the wife is at college Wednesdays. There is usually 10 plus there.
Small slim flies for the tanks, black buzzers, dark diawls with red heads. Possibly a small gold head tadpole on the point early season. Long, long leader. Steve on the game counter in Veals I think has a Tanks season permit so seek him out.
As Dave (Bristolflyer) says the banks are normally good (that's killed it) early season so no need to boat fish till later. Afternoon and evening boat, again as Dave says, good value.
Don't view the evening boat comp as a comp. More a league and as I say you don't have to compete. You will learn a lot quickly.
Cheers,
Mark |

Ah, you guys are great -- super friendly already -- I can't wait for the season to start!
Interesting point on long leaders (I read that in another thread somewhere too) -- I was used to using much shorter setups because I'd fished rivers years ago so I'd not really considered to use a leader of, say, 20ft. Good point!

I've still got that article (could prob. scan it if you want - double page spread)
I think it was being discussed at the end of the Bristol Waters 2009 thread _________________ Tom Bugs

Hi Tom - thanks for the link etc.
What I am enquiring about is whether any results, outcomes, decisions or conclusions have been arrived at, subsequent to the netting and tagging, and if so are they in the public domain.
Any news guys.
Doug
ps - just when we thought it was all over awoke to 3 inches of snow this morning. So glad I bought a Freelander 2. |
