Hi to Tom and everyone else on the Bristol Water thread.
I'd echo the comments about the BW evening leagues. They're really friendly, non-competitive (unless you want to be ) and a great way to build up some information about the good areas and the best techniques.
There's also been mention of the BRFFA membership and site. This is just a reminder that the first of the fly tying evenings will be at the Chew Stoke Inn this coming Monday, January 25th, starting about 7.30.
If you're not a member but are interested to find out more about the Association then do come along as well. It's more of a social but you're bound to pick up lots of good ideas and local knowledge too.
Hope to see some of you there. |

Had intended to go to the tying evening Andrew but a mate and I are planning to fish the Taff Monday for grayling so may not make it if that pans out..
As you say worth it for anyone interested. If I can get there I will.
Cheers,
Mark |

Me too. Here's hoping for an opening day like certain other forum members have enjoyed in the past...
I wonder if they will stock a bunch of biggies early season to counter the negative press that Chew got last year. |

I'll count myself very lucky if I have another opening day limit like that again in my life, let alone next season, Dave!
Six weeks today, and counting.

Was in Veals yesterday - they have got some interesting new fly tying stuff - left with a sack full of goodies - a really nice pale ginger seals fur, some new colours of holo tinsel, and thin ribbing wire in a bunch of new colours. I've can finally tie proper 'red-wire ribbed DBs' like Mr blagdon-lake.net recommends. |

Hi Flyer
Remember to keep those D-Bs nice and slim, just a single strand of peacock should be enough. And I had success last season with a version that had small holo red tinsel cheeks - just tied in loose against the head and then trimmed short.
Good luck and happy tying! |

Going to put them on a B110 hook to Dave? What Mark does not say on the Blag site is that some put a base of varnish down before they wrap the herl, one as Andrew says. Smooth the fibers before you wrap the rib. Makes em super slim.
Also you can dispense with the herl altogether, just thread body and wire rib. I have not had these work but I know some of the season chaps deploy these.
I'm running the same old flies on the first trips out this year. No dosh to splash out on tying materials, spent up on new lines. Also a new chest pack, my vest is too long for the river and the lower pockets are always wet.
Itching to be out. 40 days to go....
Cheers,
Mark |

Dave - you were a few days early going to Veals, my old mate Phil says their sale starts this Saturday and he has a long shopping list. We are of to the North Esk Pert beat mid April and he needs to tie some flies to go with the 10,000 he already has
Concur with Mark - had great success just wrapping black thread on the hook and ribbing with red copper wire, a turn of red seals fur behind the thorax and a herl or seals fur head with PT over the top, no dangly legs or breathers (always get caught up when tying on to the leader but then I'm a crap tyer).Use kamasan b200 for early season for additional weight with fluro leader - gives more control IMO than inty's or sinkers.
Looking forward to the start but probably won't be down for the 1st day scrum.
Cheers
