We're heading to mainland Spain next month. A wee place called El Campello on the Costa Blanca near Alicante.

I'm going to be restricted in what I can take because we're flying Ryan Air Rolling Eyes so I reckon I'll take a spinning rod with a small amount of spinners and some bait gear. Does anyone have any experience of fishing in this area they'd like to share ?

I'm asssuming the only fishing available will be in the sea with bait for small stuff unless anyone can advise differently.

Hi
Was in Tunisia last week and lots of shore fishing going on,all light leads and worms.Rich did fill me in with info on rigs etc but i ended up not taking any gear with me.
Now i would assume that Spain would offer similar opportunitiues.Very little tidal movement in the Med so lightish gear can be used.
Happened to take some mags over with me for reading whilst sunning myself Laughing .
Lo and behold,Fly fishing and Fly tying ,January edition has an article on fly fishing the Med,Spain/Italy etc. Should that be of interest and you can't get hold of the mag let me know and i will detach the pages and post em to you.
Chris

Thanks for the info Chris, I'll try and pick up a copy of the magazine tomorrow. I think I'll just be taking a spinning rod though as Ryanair hammer you for excess baggage and my better half has wised up to just how much fishing gear you can actually get in a suitcase Twisted Evil

Take some small trebles and tie up a trace with three droppers about 3 inches long with the trebles attached. Put a lead bomb on the lower end of the trace (these are usually easily available and cheap in Spain). Tie the top end of the trace to a swivel and then a shock leader, if required, before the running line.

Make a fairly stiff dough from flour, water and fish oil (or mashed tuna will do) and mold small lumps of it around the trebles. Cast out as far as you can into deeper water and hold the rod up almost vertically watching the tip for any unusual movements. I did rather well on this method last summer. I found the best times were at dawn or late at night.

Best of luck Donald! Very Happy

That's great thanks guys. I really like the idea of the flour mixed with fish oil or the like as bait Rich. Guys in the canaries use small chunks of shrimps but that's a much better way of making a little go a long way.

What kind of weights were you using. I weighed some bombs the other night that I brought back from Lanzarote a few years ago and they were 5 oz Shock

I've never bothered with a license before but it seems they're pretty inexpensive so I'll get one this time. I'll also be staying out of the harbour's because I've always had a suspicion that the cops I passed on the way home from some night time mullet fishing in Puerto Del Carmen Harbour were after me. Luckily the rod was in the rucksack by that time though Smile

It's illegal to fish in Spanish harbours, end of story. There's a big fine nowadays so I'm told. 5oz bombs will probably snap a spinning rod! I used 1 to 2oz I think as the sea was quite calm where I was. Also, if you can, spool up with 40lb braid. Bite detection is much better that way.

Yep, I only found that out about the harbours recently and about the licences too but am still trying to get to the bottom of whether one is required for sea fishing and whether it's practical to get one as they can take a couple of weeks to process.

The rod will be a 10-40 gm so it should handle 2 oz leads fairly easily. I have cast a 4 oz lead with a 7-30gm rod but wouldn't reccommend it as it now has stress marks in the carbon fibre. This happened when I was just experimenting with sea fishing and didn't really understand how rod weghts and stuff worked. It's actually my favourite spinning rod ( 4 pce 10ft Daiwa regal spin special ) and I'm so glad it didn't break.
