This is a little pattern that I found in 'Czech Nymph and Other Related Fishing Methods' by Karel Krivanec et al (2007) and which I first tied for a trip to Slovenia, where it was very successful. Subsequently, I've used it at home for both trout and grayling and it continues to be a very successful pattern for me.

Hook: Grip 12413bl size 16
Bead: 2.5mm White tungsten
Thread: Veevus 16/0 Black
Tail: Partridge neck
Body: Lagartun Oval Gold X-Strong Medium (covered BugBond Lite)
Thorax: Peacock Dubbing 04 Black

I used to converse with Karel via email. A very nice and helpful person.

He sent me a signed copy of his book in exchange for copies of Trout and Salmon and other magazines.

He couldn't get any decent fishing mags where he lived.

I got a few funny looks from our little west Wales village post office sending brown paper packages to far off places.

I also received some nymphs from the contributors to the book, huge things, I still have them.

Indeed! It was a bit of a shock when I fished the Sava in Slovenia to see some of the 'abominations' the locals were fishing with . . . closest way to describe them would be budgies with lead heads. Mind you, while I was there, there was a hatch of stoneflies that were closer to sparrows than anything I'd seen before!
