I DO mix up quite a lot at a time, so the Kenwood coffee grinder gets a fair amount of use. It's not as good as the old Moulinex I used to have and which finally expired amid a pungent pong of burnt-out electrics, but it does a reasonable job. I never like faffing about with a pinch here, and a pinch there. Whole packets go in if necessary.

These work well too. A whole shaved Hare's Mask and a packet of Olive UV Ice Dub and you have dubbing to die for . . .

Hare's mask? Never use it. Get a whole hare skin, cure it myself, trim off all the belly and side skin to leave just the back of the animal - the bit with all the nice gold and black hair. Trim the top three quarters inch off and shove that through the grinder. That's what I call hare's fur. I'm still using up the last one I did four years ago.

The best mix I use is Frankie McPhilips Donegal Olive plus 10% red seal plus 10% chopped silver Litebrite. Used as a thorax for beaded PTN's & GRHE nymphs and as a body for shrimp patterns it has the grayling forming a queue. Also excellent for the stillwater version of the PTN that is my go-to fly on Farmoor. Lord knows how many fish THAT fly has caught me over the years.

Next in line is 50% yellow seal, 50% natural seal and add about 10% chopped Gold Litebrite. Try that for mayfly bodies. Flies tied with that have caught around 200 trout during mayfly time over the last three seasons, and not a Grey Wulff in sight.
