I shared a boat with Jack Welshman from the Completefisher Facebook group today where we hoped to fish with Tony( lakesfisher) and Steve (blondie) but unfortunately Tony's car broke down on the way so in the end it was only us.
We left the jetty at around 8.30 and headed towards Stratford for the first drift. The weather was reasonable with broken cloud and a north westerly breeze and although there was a little colour in the water visibilty was still very good at around 5 to 6 feet so we were feeling pretty confident. However we found it hard to avoid the weeds and after a couple of unsuccessful drifts we decided to try Herons . This looked quite promising especially after Jack had a follow but as nothing else happened we decided to try the Jetties (too windy) and then behind the Island.
Here we found some welcome shelter from the wind which had picked up since the morning but there was more colour in the water due to the wind action so we decided to try Spring Bay (too windy) and ended up back over in the shelter of Moreton which offered some reasonably weed free drifts. Sadly, these drifts came to nothing so at my request we decided to try a drift from the Oak trees to the mouth of Herons. Fortunately the wind had died down by then and we managed a good drift which rewarded me with a small Jack between 3 to 4lbs . That was our first pull in over 9 hours!
After that we decided to try Villice were we managed to set up a nice long drift next to a weed bed. We didnt have to wait long before Jack has a take which he thought was from a small fish until it rolled on the surface! Once it woke up it led him a merry dance before it was safely netted, weighed at 14lb 5oz and safely returned.
Not long after Jack had a another big single but I couldn't even get a follow until I pulled out of another small Jack back at the jetties just before it was time to come in at 9.30pm.
At 13 hours without a break it was a long, hard session but at least I didn't blank and seeing Jacks double in the net made it all worthwhile. Just a shame Steve and Tony couldn't make it but I'm sure there will be another time.
