Once the trout season is nearly over on the Bristol reservoirs my attention turns to fly piking on the Somerset Levels and this was to be my first session of the winter. However instead of my usual tried and tested beats I fished somewhere else on the Levels this time under the guidance of Jack Welshman who fishes this area often.

The weather couldn't have been better with a mild temperature , overcast sky and next to no wind and when I arrived at what I thought was the right spot shortly after 08.15 I was met by the sight of fry being harried by something beneath them. What more could I ask for? Jack arrived shortly after to say that say that this wasn't the spot he was thinking of, but when he saw the shoal of baitfish he decided that perhaps it was the right place after all so we set about catching our first pike of the day.

I was expecting a pull first cast but that never happened and it was Jack who caught the culprit shortly afterwards. It wasn't a big fish by any means but he followed it up with a croc of around 4 to 5lb shortly after while I was still waiting for my first pull. After no more action we decided to move to the next spot where we were supposed to meet.

The next area was one of Jacks favourite stretches and I could see why when he landed another two fish and lost a couple while I was still waiting for my first pull. However a change to a different fly seemed to make a difference and soon I had two small crocs including one that gave an aerobatic display before coming to the net.

Then with an hour or so to go before dark we decided to try another spot further downstream which was wider and deeper than our other beats. I had a good feeling about this area which was justified when a decent Jack pounced on my fly near the end of retrieve. It gave a good account of itself and after a quick photo was safely returned ...


We both picked up more fish from this area before darkness finally fell and ended up with 14 between us with Jack getting 9 of them and us both missing and losing more fish than we caught.

So although we had nothing big, it was a good session and I must say it was a pleasure to fish for something that was prepared to chase and hit my fly hard for a change!
