That is a great result and a stunning fish, Ian!
I'm sure there are people have fished Chew their whole life and not caught anything that big.
Top, top angling! 😎

Here you go Ian. I've pinched it from the CF facebook page to save time. Just wish I had been there to take a 'trophy' shot of you holding the fish ...
Hopefully the steps below will help in future ...
From a PC
1) Left click on 'Browse' and find the image you want to upload from your files (must be 2.5mb or smaller)
2) Left click on 'the image
3) Left click 'open' in the bottom right corner
4) Left Click on 'submit'
The file name will appear in white letters on a blue background.
5) RIGHT click on the link and select 'cut'
6) RIGHT click and then 'Paste' the link into your post
I haven't tried it myself, but I imagine the same steps would apply to a phone, although obviously you would have to have the image appropriately resized in a file on your phone, rather than on your PC!
Hope this helps

Beautiful fish and nice start to the season. I fished North Shore on saturday and caught 4 from 3 - 3.75lb all on orange booby. You have had to work hard for all fish this season, I fished Herons for a few hours without a touch, not complaining though.
Anyone braving Blagdon tomorrow? The weather forcasts can't seem to make up their mind. |

Just read that someone has been banned for poor fish handling - it must have been bad (like just throwing it up the bank alive) for the management to take that stance. Good riddance I say. |

I hear you loud and clear, Dave!
I'm planning to fish the season ticket day on Blagdon tomorrow but may moderate my plans after checking the weather.

Alan where would be a good place to fish on a 20mph SW wind? I'm guesing all the north bank would be unfishable and the lawn will be well coloured |

I've just looked at the weather forecast for tomorrow
I think the shelter of either Cheddar Water or along Butcombe will be your best bet although I imagine everyone else will think the same.
I don't think I'll be making an early start somehow!

I will not be rocking up tomorrow at 4am....but if I was....WSW or pure W winds are the most difficult at Blagdon.
As Allrounder says Butcombe will be first choice unless the gusts become more Southerly. The hot spot will be the red life buoy point along the path into the bay after after the car park entrance . This always fishes well early season.
Beyond that along the path there are a few good pitches if you can back cast accurately up to the open beach (sometime stocking point)area at the end of the stones just before the willow tree. This also usually fishes well early doors. The stones themselves to the right of the car park entrance also offer good pitches and I have often started in these after a later arrival and had a good few hours.
If the wind is more southerly then Cheddar opens up and the Green lawn east side and then the deeper west side come into play.
The east side of Rainbow is also protected from Westerlies and will be a favourite of many regulars. Beware the spit at the end of the east side which has very soft footing but its ok up to two thirds along.
It all depends on how westerly the wind is and how strong.
Because of these early season westerlies I have often fished Chew on the Blaggers Opening Day with great success and far fewer crowds. The Chew west shore should be a much better proposition!.

Can I just say how good it is to see the regulars posting again after a long wet winter. The forum is such a valuable resource with folk willing to share their hard won wisdom. It would be such a shame to lose it.
I hope everyone has a good season and there are some lunkers for all of us |

Hi Chaps, just looking at this seasons posts as I am due to fish opening day again this year and put up my annual post! I noticed the pic of the dirty great big orange snake fly, so thought I should bring your attention to this, as I wouldn't want any of you getting chucked off the lake!
Snake flies - I was looking on the BW website at the rules, as I was curious about fly fishing on Blagdon in regard to fly size. On Chew you can use what fly you like as pike fishing is open to all fly fishers. As Blagdon is only open to Pike fishing on a trial basis only, there is a fly length restriction of 2 inches for general fishing. The rules are not too easy to find (Resources tab at top of home page/rules and regs tab/ general fishing rules and regs) see here: https://www.bristolwaterfisheries.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/General-Fishing-Rules-Regulations-2020.pdf
Rule 2. "Pike fly fishing is only permitted at Chew Valley Lake. Any angler found to be pike fly fishing at other waters operated by Bristol Water plc may face exclusion from fishing at Bristol Water Fisheries. Flies no larger than 2†are to be used at Blagdon Lake. Leader strength must not exceed 25lb and wire traces and/or armoured tippet are not permitted at Blagdon Lake. Anyone suspected of pike fly fishing at Blagdon lake (i.e carrying pike fly fishing equipment) will face an immediate ban. Flies over 5 grams in weight are not permitted at any waters operated by Bristol Water plc."
Length wise even just using marabou feather, it is easy to exceed 2". I attach picture of a few I knocked up last night to get the season underway, and these are marginal even though I wouldn't consider these excessive and I am sure these would be viewed as legit by the BW rangers. Something to bear in mind anyway.
Tight Lines in advance of my opening day post!
