I had my first pike session on the Levels since last February today due to the trout keeping me occupied on the Bristol reservoirs. Conditions were mainly overcast and mild with no wind at all in the morning although it did pick up in the afternoon. Water level and clarity were good for this venue.

I started with my Scierra sink tip with a 6" Roach pattern and thought my luck was in when I had a hit second cast from a nice fish between 6 and 7lb. It was quickly returned without a pic as I though I was going to have red letter day in terms of quantity if not quality but sadly that wasn't the case.

Despite fishing different flies and lines I had to wait another 4 hours before I had any more action when this smaller fish took the same fly presented on floating line an hour before dark.

So a lot tougher than I expected after catching my first fish so quickly but still a very enjoyable day nontheless. Very Happy

Alan

Nice fat one!

Do you find that the pike get put off by a bit of frost, or do they keep feeding? I'm thinking of trying for a zander this weekend and the spot I'm thinking of has some good pike too.

Both of them were sturdy, fit fish which could have come from Chew which was very good news. Very Happy

With my usual caveat of 'when it comes to fish, the rule is there are no rules' probably the best Fly Pike angler I know relishes the oncoming of frost on rivers and drains because he finds that's when the big mama's really start to show up. His track record speaks for itself and I certainly don't disagree, but I find on cold days there is usually a short 'window of opportunity' that can happen at any time but in my experience usually early on in the afternoon. It doesn't last long so if you get a pull or a fish after a long time with no action then dont waste any time getting your fly back in the water and fish hard! Very Happy

Will you be fishing the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal for Zander? Very Happy

Its just that my mate Jack fishes for them there. He says they are fun to catch but tricky to hook on the fly. Smile
