Avian Flu is rampant down here in Cornwall, there are signs in various harbours warning not to handle dead sea birds and reports of 20 or so birds washed in with each tide.
We counted up to ten dead gulls floating in the sea around Porthleven, plus others in different locations. It has all been Gulls that I have spotted, unfortunately no cormorants.
No doubt there are casualties at the reservoirs as well.

Same on the Bristol channel - I can't let the dog off the lead at the beach as she finds so many dead gulls to roll on! |

Not seen much evidence of it recently although there were a number of dead swans on the Somerset Levels last winter.
I hope history doesn't repeat itself.

Just learnt from Radio 4 that Avian Bird flue is spread from bird poo. Geese seem to be one of the major spreaders, this made me think of all the poo on the banks of Farmoor from the influx of the various goose populations.
A shooting friend commented that Partridge are also in short supply because the chicks are imported from France.
Advice from the expert was keep clear of the poo and make sure everything is disinfected,

As long as you don't start cuddling Charlie Fox or Oliver Otter you should be fine, Peter. |
