I've just ordered some flies from the US (being tied to order and they're only $1.10 for a saltwater pattern Wink ) and the postage was an amazing $6.95 which is Global Priority Mail. That works out at about 3.95 to get them from the US to the UK. The majority of mail order firms in the UK would charge well over that for the average package.

Why do UK firms think it's ok to make such a mark up on postage costs? Evil or Very Mad

As you will know I only charge 0.56p for small orders under a tenner and free postage on all order over that.

The reason some companies over charge and make profit from postage is simple.
The UK angler accepts it as normal.

While I'm on the subject of ranting about cons, why do some companies think it is acceptable to use a premium rate phone line for their orders? I am put off ordering from ones which don't have a local rate number or a freephone number. I don't pay to go in to a shop to order goods so why should I pay over the odds to phone an order through?

I'm in total agreement with you Chris, I feel it is scandalous that these companies should and can charge over the top prices for post & packaging, the example you have given proves that items can be sent for a lot less than they are..
And don't even get me started on E-Bay postage prices

Something that annoys me is booking charges on tickets. I don't know how they can sleep at night.

I just ordered something from the internet and got charged 3% for using a credit card Evil or Very Mad I had to have the stuff so I had no choice, there was no extra levy for using a debit card but I never had one handy.

I've stumbled across that quite a bit on Ebay, I think it is the hassle of dealing with the foreign currency if not using Paypal, filling in customs forms etc, and the increased chances of it getting lost in the post.
