On Friday 13th April I took my sister and brother-in-law out on Kamara II - they are visiting us from Australia. And with my 1st mate, Hamisi on leave my son was driving the boat and since he has been working with me since early January he knows just what to do. It is really a great experience to work together with your own son doing what you both love.

We decided to head out towards Pemba Island having seen all the skippies and small yellowfin a few days earlier. The weather was pretty miserable and it rained fairly steadily all day. There were yet again plenty of small skippies about a few dorado, rather less of those than the other day but it was on our way home some 8 miles out that we saw the bigger yellowfin. It had begun to get quite squally and dare I say it even cold when we started seeing big splashes all over the place. We hooked one and when it took a long run on the 50 we knew that it was a better sized fish, not huge but bigger than what we had been getting up til now. It was actually 23kg and we followed this up with one of 14-kg but it was getting late and we were expected out to dinner so reluctantly we headed home. But, its really interesting to see these guys already so may be in May or June we might even get some big tunas so long as the weather is manageable. It can be aq really interesting time of the year weather permitting and in recent years I have seen a lot of fish out in the channel. I shall let you know what happens.

Sea Adventures Ltd, Shimoni, Kenya offers fishing charters on either the 46-ft "Broadbill" skippered by the old man of the sea, Pat or on the 42-ft "Kamara II skippered by myself in to the Pemba Channel or live aboard fishing safaris. In my reports I will try to give an honest appraisal of the fishing out of Shimoni, whether on our boats or others.
